Exposure to and conversation with native speakers is an essential
element of learning a second language. I focus on teaching
students of English correct pronunciation of English in its spoken
context, which is often very different from the way words are pronounced
isolated from speech. Often mistakes in pronunciation are
passed down from teacher to student because teachers don’t teach
the sounds that occur when words are combined. This makes
our speech seem strangely “off” for even some very common words.
Vocabulary building and grammar are also an important focus of
my work. North American grammar differs in many ways from
English spoken elsewhere in the world and there are even many differences
between Canadian and U.S. English, which can lead to hilarious misunderstandings.
In my teaching I encourage students to converse
about a topic for discussion, use teaching aids to build vocabulary
and learn concepts in English, and create oral reports on various
aspects of North American culture. As both a Canadian and
U.S. citizen I can easily show how these two peoples view the world,
joke, and play in very differently ways.
I enjoy teaching Chinese students who have proven to be bright,
eager, and quick to learn. I invite you to join us.
